Tania's Racing History:
In June of 1999, after years of encouragement from my uncle, J.P. Mohn, I decided to pursue motorcycle drag racing. What better place to start than on a Honda 80. This was my first motorcycle experience. In only one session I graduated to a 1991 Harley Davidson Sportster. After learning the basics, starting, stopping, shifting, and turning, I graduated to a 1999 Harley Davidson Dyna Glide. J.P. and I took the Dyna to our local racetrack, Sears Point Raceway, where I won the third ET Bracket Race I entered there.
My first official drag race was in October of 1999 at the California Fun Drags in Sacramento California. In one of my elimination rounds I had a perfect reaction time. I ended up finishing the race 15th, out of approximately sixty competitors, in the ET Bracket class. I joined the AHDRA in March of 2000 competing in the Screaming Eagle Performance class, an 11.5 second index. I raced in Phoenix Arizona, Kent Washington, Woodburn Oregon and Las Vegas Nevada in that season. It was truly a learning experience. I was racing the Dyna, which was too big and awkward for me. We also made dramatic changes to the motorcycle between every race, so I had to relearn how to ride the motorcycle every race. I started the 2000 season running a 12.8-second quarter mile and ended the season running an 11.81-second quarter mile. Two weeks before the race in Las Vegas (2000) we finished the shovelhead I am racing now. This bike fit me better and I felt very comfortable riding it. I tested the motorcycle in Las Vegas and we spent the off season making adjustments.
In 2001 I rejoined the AHDRA competing in the Screaming Eagle Performance class. The shovelhead was working perfectly and I was running within hundredths of the 11.5-second index. I started the season qualifying number one in Phoenix Arizona. I made the finals in Kent Washington and I made the semi-finals in Woodburn Oregon. In Las Vegas I didn't qualify due to a broken chain but I was still able to retain runner up in the western division points.
I returned to the AHDRA in 2002. We added three more cubic inches to the motor and we changed from a dry primary to a wet primary. We also had to replace the after-market cases to Harley cases so that it would comply with the new Screaming Eagle Performance class rules. When we took the motorcycle out of the trailer in Phoenix Arizona it was running three tenths under the index. Way too fast! I struggled to adjust to this increase in speed and horsepower. I had to learn to slow down going down the track. I ended up breaking out early in my elimination races at both Phoenix Arizona and Roswell New Mexico. By the time we went to Denver I was able to adjust my riding style and I ended up making the semi-finals. I also made the semi-finals in Kent Washington. In Woodburn Oregon, after a rough day of qualifying, we spent Saturday night trying to repair the clutch.
I ended up going out in the second round of eliminations on Sunday. We finished the season in Las Vegas Nevada. I qualified third there out of forty-nine competitors. Only thirty-two bikes made the field, and I was only thirty points behind in the Western Division. I ended up making the quarterfinals. I won the Western Division SEP points Championship by ten points.
It has been a trend that I get a lot of publicity at the events because I am a successful female racer. I have even signed autographs and have had my picture in magazines. I love to talk to people and I feel that I have represented my sponsors very well. I am consistently improving and gaining the respect of my fellow competitors and the fans. I have met a lot of people in the past three years. I have established many great relationships both among my fellow racers and the AHDRA administration. I appreciate all the help I can get and do my very best to make sure my sponsors are satisfied. I feel that I am a very good representative and I feel that I could represent you well.
