The Old Shovelhead
What has JP done now? I bet you are dying to know. For the last two years JP has been squeezing more power out of this old antique than even he could imagine. Once again he has found more. My best ET now is a 10.7 second quarter mile at 122 MPH, and the motorcycle wasn't even tuned properly.
Last year JP changed the cases to 1980 stock Harley cases to meet the SEP class requirements. We were using old stock heads, a mild cam, and pistons that produced less compression than our current pistons. For this season JP changed the heads. The new heads are performance heads that were worked over by Dave Mackie. Then he replaced the pistons with some higher compression ones. He topped it off with a very wild cam. This has proven to be a very good combination. The more testing we do, and the better it gets tuned, the faster it is going to go.
We anticipate that by the end of the 2003 season I will be running in the mid to low 10 second range. My sixty foot times have already increased by almost one tenth of a second from last season. After JP mounted the bars in front of the forks I am able to launch a lot harder without losing my balance. This is also key for improving my sixty foot times and the overall performance . I have to say that JP has done an incredible job putting this bike together.
